Hand Numbness: Wrist or Neck?
Carpal tunnel syndrome and neck-related nerve irritation can feel similar. Here is how clinicians tell them apart.
Numbness or tingling in the hand may come from compression at the wrist, irritation of a nerve root in the neck, or other causes. The pattern of symptoms, what provokes them, and examination findings help distinguish them.
Why it matters
Care directed at the wrong region tends not to help. Progressive weakness, muscle wasting, or constant numbness should be evaluated without delay, and may warrant additional testing or referral.
